What We Do

On a seasonal and yearly basis our Environmental Health Specialists conduct a thorough inspection on all public swimming pools and spas. These inspections are done in accordance to the following regulations.

Utah State Code: 26A-1-114
Utah State Rule: R392-302 and R380-40-8
County Ordinance: Chapter 9.36 Public Swimming
Board of Health Regulation: #2 Swimming Pools

Our department also responds to complaints from the general public and our pool samplers. These complaints will sometimes warrant a full inspection.

A new swimming pool/spa is required to have a formal review of plans and must be approved before construction can begin. Our department will review the plans and also follow-up with construction inspections.

All public swimming pools/spas are required to be permitted through our department. If they are not permitted our specialists will close the facility until they acquire a permit. The permit application can be acquired through our bureau via walk-in or fax.

Every month we have water samplers that test every public pool and spas in Salt Lake County. During their visit to the facility they test the water’s pH and chlorine. They also collect a small water sample which is later tested for normal bacteria and fecal bacteria. The facility will be notified if a sample is failed.

Educating the public is crucial to our department. Yearly we send a letter to each facility regarding regulation change. We also create education material that is handed out during each routine inspection.
