The purpose of the Solid and Hazardous Waste Program at the Salt Lake Valley Health Department is:
- Permitting and inspection of landfills and waste processing facilities
- Assists small business in identifying and managing wastes and pollution prevention strategies
- Responds to environmental emergencies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year;
- Ensures the public is educated about how to recycle and dispose of used oil properly;
- Regulates the demolition of buildings to make sure that hazardous materials are properly removed and disposed of;
- Permits waste tire haulers; and administers the tire recycling fund for Salt Lake County.
The mission of the program is to protect groundwater and surface water by ensuring that solid and hazardous waste is disposed of properly.
This is accomplished by:
- Responding to complaints about illegal dumping 24 hours a day,
- Taking enforcement action when necessary,
- Conducting educational workshops to the community,
- Inspecting landfills and solid waste processing facilities, and
- Issuing permits to landfills, transfer stations, and processing facilities.
