The Drinking Water program includes watershed/source protection, groundwater, and public water supplies.

At the Salt Lake Valley Health Department we help protect the public drinking water systems by:

  • Inspecting the 35 community and 40 non-community public water systems on a regular schedule to ensure safety.
  • Collecting water samples from systems on a regular basis and analyzed for indicators of contamination.
  • Investigating suspected waterborne illnesses and complaints from the public.
  • Building plans are reviewed to make sure that adequate drinking water is available.
  • Developing plans and regulation for drinking water source protection.

The Salt Lake Valley Health Department strives to protect public drinking water supplies and ensure fluoride is added to the water through enforcement of Health Regulations #11, 12, 14 and 33 and the proposed County Drinking Water Source Protection Ordinance.

Significant changes to the proposed County Drinking Water Source Protection Ordinance since Feb. 23, 2010 include:

  1. Receiving GIS data directly from the State of Utah for the source protection map instead of being created by the county,
  2. Allowing an applicant the ability to develop a land management strategy with a public water system and have it recognized by this ordinance,
  3. Clarifying the methods for appeal,
  4. Requiring public water systems to notify affected land owners prior to developing a new water source,
  5. Defining public water systems affected by the ordinance better,
  6. Excluding the primary and secondary recharge areas from the land use matrix, and
  7. Expanding the members of the technical committee which hears appeals.
