Tobacco Prevention and Education
Tobacco Retail Education
The goal of the Salt Lake Valley Health Department is to promote, protect and foster community and environmental health through quality service.
With that belief in focus, Utah State mandates that tobacco compliance checks be conducted four times yearly at every tobacco retailer in the valley in order to reduce the number of illegal sales to underage youth. It is our hope that you, as a responsible community business entity, will assist in our efforts.
We cannot stress enough the importance of educating your employees about the penalties that follow a violation. Providing tobacco to minors is a Class C Misdemeanor making it a criminal offense serious enough for arrest. Many companies have policies that require immediate termination; however, we have found that few employees realize that the punishment will truly be carried out.
Please take advantage of the information provided through the website or by contacting us directly to stop the illegal sale of tobacco to minors. All retail education materials provided by SLVHD are free of charge.
For further information please contact the SLVHD at (801) 468-2124.
