What is the 5 A’s Program?
The 5 A’s Program was developed by the U.S. Public Health Service and is a proven effective smoking cessation strategy for healthcare providers that can be implemented in 3-5 minutes.
The 5 A’s represent a set of clinical guidelines for Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence in patients.
What can healthcare providers do?
- Ask about tobacco use either verbally or through a written form.
- Advise all tobacco users to quit.
- Assess their willingness to make a quit attempt.
- Assist the patient in quitting.
- Arrange follow-up to support their efforts.
