Lead Safe Housing Program
The goal of the Lead Safe Housing Program is to reduce lead poisoning by helping property owners improve the condition of their homes and rental units.
Now Available: Money For Remodeling
If your home or rental units were built before 1978, children are present and there is lead based paint, you may qualify for a grant to cover the costs of:
- Window Replacement
- Siding Installation
- Repainting
- Other projects to control lead based paint hazards
Interested in the Program?
Review the following points to see if you are eligible.
- Built before 1978?
- Potential lead based paint hazards? (peeling paint, worn windows, etc.)
- Property located in Salt Lake County?
- Property ownership can be verified?
- Homeowners: Child under six years of age lives in or often visits home (at least 6 hours per week or 60 hours per year)?
- Homeowners: Household income is at or below 80% of the area median adjusted for family size-see table below.
- Rental Property Owners: Household incomes for tenants meet the following guidelines:
- Four or fewer units in complex
- 50% of households at or below 50% of the area median, adjusted for family size
- remaining 50% of households have income at or below 80% of median
- Five or more units in complex
- 50% of households at or below 50% of the area median, adjusted for family size
- 30% of households at or below 80% of median
- remaining 20% can have income in excess of 80% of median
If you answered “yes” to the questions, you are eligible.

Interested and eligible? Here’s what will happen:
- First, you'll need to fill out an application form
- Then your property will be tested for lead
- The Health Department will test the children for lead poisoning
- A certified lead based paint contractor will fix or remove the lead hazards
- Depending on the size and location of the project(s), we'll work out a plan for you or your tenants to move out of the house while work is being done
- More tests will be done to make sure your home is safe to live in.
