2011 Salt Lake County Injury Prevention Strategic Plan
Why is a Salt Lake County Injury Prevention Strategic Plan Needed?
On average each year in Salt Lake County approximately 69,000 residents visit an Emergency Department for injuries and 4,000 of these individuals have injuries serious enough to be hospitalized. Injuries remain among the leading causes of death for those ages 0-64.
The reality however is that most injuries are preventable and as a county we are making progress. A few of our successes include:
-
Between 2005 to 2009 overall visits for all ages to Salt Lake County Emergency Departments for injuries decreased by 10%.
-
The teen motor vehicle crash fatality rate for Salt Lake County has decreased from 16.92 per 100,000 population in 2000 to 10.75 per 100,000 in 2009.
-
Child Safety restraint use for ages 0-4 has increased from 90% in 2003 to 98% in 2008 and for ages 5-10 from 81% to 96%.
Thank you for helping us develop a strategic plan for the future that will prevent more injuries and ultimately lead to a safer place for all of us to live, work and play.
