Booster Seat Basics

Booster Seats should be used for kids over 40 lbs who still do not fit correctly in adult safety belts.

Every Utah child up to age 8 must be in a child safety seat or booster seat.  More information on Utah's child occupant protection laws:

Booster Seat Tips

  • Position the lap belt snugly over hips or upper thighs and the shoulder belt snugly across the chest & shoulder.
  • You must use BOTH lap & shoulder belts with booster seats.

Types of Booster Seats

high back boosterHigh Back Belt-Positioning Booster - typically 30-100 lbs. Use if your vehicle seat has a low back, like a bench seat in a van
Backless Belt-Positioning backless boosterBooster - typically 40-100 lbs.

For more information about booster seats, see the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Safety Belt Fit Test (for kids over 8):

Your child is ready for the seat belt when:

  • Their knees bend over the seat edge with child sitting all the way back on the seat
  • Lap belt lies on upper legs or hips
  • Shoulder belt lies on shoulder/collarbone
  • Child can sit that way for entire trip

Not ready to put your child in a booster only? Or, only have lap belts in your vehicle?
