The Basics - Children Using Seat Belts Only

Note: When children pass the Safety Belt Fit Test (below) safety belts may be used.

Every Utah child up to age 8 must be in a child safety seat or booster seat.

More information on Utah's child occupant protection laws:

Safety Belt Fit Test (for kids over 8):

Your child is ready for the seat belt when:

  • Their knees bend over the seat edge with child sitting all the way back on the seat
  • Lap belt lies on upper legs or hips
  • Shoulder belt lies on shoulder/collarbone
  • Child can sit that way for entire trip

Seat Belt Tips

  • Keep shoulder belt snug and flat across chest and shoulder and lap belt snug and flat over hips or upper thighs.
  • NEVER put shoulder belts under kids’s arms or behind their backs!
  • Even with advanced air bags or no air bags, the back seat is safer for children.

Only have lap belts in your vehicle?

There are alternatives for children over 40 lbs.
