Frequently Asked Questions
How did you get my name and information?
Certain diseases are reportable due to their infectious properties and threat to others. Doctors, labs and clinics are legally required to report the disease and accompanying demographics so that appropriate epidemiology and disease containment can occur.
Why are you calling? I've already discussed this matter with my doctor.
Because of the communicable nature of your disease we are required to investigate. The information gathered is used to detect trends, clusters, or outbreaks of illness. It also helps determine if an outbreak is over or if additional measures are needed to ameliorate the situation.
Will my employer be notified of this?
Generally speaking we will not notify your employer of a recent diagnosis. This is private medical information and does not need to be shared.
On rare occasions an employee works in a high risk occupation i.e. food-handler, daycare worker, medical field. If exclusion from work for a time is indicated your supervisor or employer may be notified of the exclusion and subsequent return but if possible the actual diagnosis will not be disclosed.
How did I get this disease? How is it passed to others?
It is extremely difficult to pinpoint exactly where an exposure may have occurred. Knowing the disease and its unique characteristics however, will make it easier to stop further spread of a disease by implementing prevention or treatment measures.
