Vehicle Emissions Frequently Asked Questions

Are some vehicles exempt from emissions testing?

Yes. Models year 1967 or older are exempt. Also, vehicles no older than six years require a test only every other year.

Do diesel powered vehicles require an emissions test?

Yes. Vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), of less than 16,001lbs., must have an opacity done on a dynamometer. Vehicles with a GVWR of 16,001 or greater require a “snap” opacity test.

Where can I get my vehicle emissions tested?

There are over 340 emissions test facilities in Salt Lake County. About 30 of these facilities can test diesel vehicles.

Will Davis, Utah and Weber counties accept an emissions certificate from Salt Lake County?

Yes, if your gasoline powered vehicle is model year 1996 or newer.

My vehicle just failed the emissions inspection. What do I do?

Repairs to your vehicle that target the cause of the emissions failure are required.
If, after completing the repairs, your vehicle still fails the test, it may qualify for a waiver.

My vehicle failed because it is "not ready."

Your vehicle did not necessarily fail the OBD test; it is just not ready to be tested. If the condition persists, consult a competent auto repair technician or call the technical center at (385) 468-3837.

My vehicle failed because of "no communication."

“No communication” means that the emissions analyzer cannot “talk” with the computer in your vehicle. After repairs, your vehicle may pass the test when communication is established.

Consult a competent auto repair technician or call the technical center at (385) 468-3837.

Do I have to pay to have my vehicle retested?

Within 30 days, you get one free retest if your vehicle received a tail pipe test. You get two free retests if the initial test was an OBD test.

How much does the emissions test cost?

The average price is about $28.00. The health department does not regulate the test fee so you may want to shop for the best price. Some stations charge as much as $40.00

How do I become a certified emissions inspector?

Call the technical center at (385) 468-3837 to schedule a pretest.

Upon passing the pretest and paying $51.00 for tuition, your name will be placed on the list for the next available two-day class.

After successfully completing the class, you will receive a certificate permitting you to do emissions tests.
