Gary Edwards was appointed director of the Salt Lake Valley Health Department in July 2005. Edwards came to SLVHD from the Southwest Public Health Department and has over 25 years of public health experience.

The Salt Lake Valley Health Department is the local health department serving Salt Lake County and a department of county government. The Salt Lake Valley Health Department works cooperatively with the Utah Department of Health and other state agencies, but is not an agency of state government.

Year Founded
The precursor to the Salt Lake Valley Health Department (Deseret Public Health) was founded in 1857. Since that time, the health department has fallen under several other titles, including the Salt Lake City Health Department and Salt Lake City-County Health Department.
