Do You Need A Hepatitis A Shot?Hepatitis A (HAV) is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis A virus and can affect anyone. In the United States, HAV can occur in situations ranging from isolated cases to widespread epidemics. It can be transmitted through contaminated food or water, or from contact with an infected person. Good personal hygiene and proper sanitation can help prevent hepatitis A. However, vaccines are also available for long-term prevention of HAV in persons 2 years of age and older. Children and adults need two shots of hepatitis A vaccine for long-term protection. Utah has a high incidence of hepatitis A and children, especially those in a day-care setting, are at a higher risk of the disease. However, the 2002 Olympics will bring 75,000 world visitors to our area, increasing the potential of hepatitis A cases in both children and adults. The SLVHD recommends that, if you haven't received your hepatitis A shot, do it now. Getting your first shot now, allows for the second shot to be given next Fall along with your flu shot. For more information on hepatitis A, or to find out where you can get your HAV vaccination, call the Immunization Hot Line at 1-800-275-0659.
