FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS REGARDING THE IMPLEMENTATION OF WATER SUPPLY FLUORIDATION

 

Q. What is the timeline for fluoride implementation in Salt Lake County?

A. The date for implementation of fluoridation in public water systems is October 1, 2003.


Q. What will be considered the optimal dosage of fluoride? What will be the allowable maximum and minimum dosages?

A. Health Department regulation #33 establishes an operating range of minimum and maximum dosage rates. These rates are 0.7 to 1.4 mg/L with a required minimal annual level of 0.8 mg/L.


Q. What are the requirements if a district already has some naturally occurring level of fluoride in the water?

A. Districts that already have some naturally occurring fluoride in their water are required to add sufficient dosages to be within the regulatory limits.


Q. State rules require that all chemical additives comply with specific ANSI/NSF Standards. What are the requirements for the chemical additives for fluoridation?

A. The chemical standards require conformance with ANSI/NSF and AWWA standards.


Q. Who has regulatory control over issues related to fluoridation?

A. Regulatory authority is under the jurisdiction of the Salt Lake Valley Health Department.


Q. What chemical form will be required for use by the water districts?

A. Chemical form is determined by the individual water districts.

Q. Are all types of water systems to be included in the implementation requirement?

A. The systems that are required include those public water systems that serve populations of 3,300 or greater.
