The Bureau of Air Pollution Control administers Vehicle Emission Inspection / Maintenance programs for both gasoline and diesel powered vehicles. Vehicles less than six years old must pass an emission test every other year prior to registration. Vehicles more than six years old are required to pass an annual emission test prior to registration. Some vehicles are exempt from the testing requirement, including vehicles manufactured prior to 1968 and farm plated vehicles.
Testing is performed by independent testing facilities located throughout the Salt Lake valley. The facilities are licensed and regulated by the Bureau of Air Pollution Control.
