Household Hazardous Waste Program (801) 313-6745
(Salt Lake County) - The Salt Lake Valley Health Department (SLVHD) wants to help Salt Lake County residents
prevent chemicals from damaging our ground water, soil, and air. The SLVHD has produced a 15-minute educational video entitled, "Waste Not, Want Not". The video identifies exactly what household hazardous waste (HHW) is and how to dispose of it responsibly.
The SLVHD is currently operating two permanent Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facilities. The first facility is located at the Salt Lake Valley Solid Waste Facility, 6030 W. California Avenue (1400 S.) The second facility is located at the Trans Jordan Landfill, 10873 S. 7200 W. Both facilities are open Monday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This is a FREE service provided to all Salt Lake County residents. The Department also offers one-day collection events in communities throughout Salt Lake County during the summer months. Go to the "Household Hazardous Waste Collection Days Schedule" link on the Department's home page for more specific information about these one-day events. Residents often express a desire to learn more about HHW that is lurking in their garages and basements. Community groups, civic clubs, churches, and schools frequently request presentations and this overwhelming demand for information led the Health Department to develop this educational and entertaining video presentation that is targeted to teenagers and adults.
The video discusses reusable products that are received from citizens and made available free of charge at Reuse Centers located at both permanent facilities. The video also details the various types of waste and chemicals that the facility receives such as paint, pesticides, fertilizers, used oil, antifreeze, batteries, fuel, etc.
Waste Not, Want Not is a community pass along video; once the video has been viewed, we don't want it back! The Health Department wants viewers to pass it to another group, class, neighbor or friend so that the message continues to circulate throughout the community. Tapes are available on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Center for Environmental Health, 788 E. Woodoak Lane (5380 S).
Videos are available for checkout at city and county libraries. For more information about the program, call (801) 313-6697.
