Public Notification of Foodborne Illness

In Salt Lake County, food service establishments that are implicated in foodborne illness reports are inspected by the Bureau of Food Protection. Data from interviews with sick individuals and the diagnosis are evaluated by the Health Department. All factors of the investigation are quickly reviewed by a committee to determine if the public must be notified.

The public will be notified as soon as possible through mass media and other available sources when the following criteria exist:

There is a confirmed diagnosis of the disease.
The establishment's sanitation evaluation indicates high-risk conditions for transmission of disease.
Food handler personal hygiene practices, specifically hand washing, are questionable or undetermined.
A food handler has worked while ill or infectious.
Patrons can be identified and noticed in time for treatment or preventive measures.
When a number of infected clients repeatedly name the establishment.
