Headed to the emergency room? Don't bring the family with you!

Busy hospital emergency rooms are no place for your healthy family members - especially children. If you must visit a local emergency department, please leave your family at home.

Why? Emergency rooms can be a hotbed of illness. Bringing healthy people into these facilities exposes them to infection.

Remember: Most people infected with H1N1/swine flu do not need to seek medical care and can recover comfortably at home. If you are concerned about your symptoms or seeking advice, visit www.slvhealth.org/h1n1, call 2-1-1 or call your health care provider.

Emergency care should be reserved for the severely ill to limit waiting room exposure and treatment delays.

How to determine if you have severe symptoms and should seek emergency medical care:

    Are you experiencing:

       1. Difficult, painful or rapid breathing?

       2. Slow, weak breathing?

       3. Shortness of breath?

       4. Chest pain?

       5. Extreme drowsiness and difficulty awakening?

       6. Disorientation or confusion?

       7. Constant vomiting or diarrhea? (especially in elderly person or young children)

       8. Coughing up blood?

       9. Blue lips, tongue or face?

      10. Too weak to move your arms or legs?

      11. Are you feeling better, then suddenly experiencing a high fever or repeat illness?

      12. Has it been more than 12 hours since you urinated?

If you answered no to all of the above symptoms:

If you answered yes to any of the above symptoms, seek immediate medical attention.
